Judaism as Culture: the key to Israel's dialogue with her neighbors
In Memory of Yitzhak Rabin.
A Discussion with Martin Ben Moreh, Director General of Meitar, The College of Judaism as Culture. The event took place at Meretz USA’s offices Beit Shalom (114 West 26th Street, 10th Floor) in New York City. Mr. Ben Moreh spoke In Memory of Yitzak Rabin on 'Judaism as Culture: the key to Israel dialogue with her neighbors'. He discussed the ways that Israeli students learn about their Judaism and Jewish identity as well as the need to help secular Israelis re-embrace Jewish history and culture.
Born in Scotland, Martin Ben Moreh made aliyah in 1970. He has been the Director of Meitar since 1990, and, prior to that, worked as Director of Military Academy for Educational Leadership in Pluralistic Judaism, Head of Youth Leadership, Kibbutz Artzi Movement, Secretary of Kibbutz Nirim, and Director of the Kibbutz Educational Center, Givat Haviva.
Meitar, the College of Judaism as Culture, works with non-orthodox Israelis to raise their awareness of Jewish tradition, cultivate their Jewish identity, and experience Judaism as a dynamic pluralistic culture. (Meitar is not a theological center but is of course not in any way anti –religious). It works to strengthen the bond between non-observant Jews and their cultural heritage, to reduce ignorance and apprehensions regarding all aspects of Jewish life, and to encourage meaningful participation in the local, national and international Jewish community.
