Meretz Chairman Yossi Beilin: The Catastrophe at Beit Hanoun – A Preordained Scenario

8/11/2006 - Meretz-Yahad Chairman, Yossi Beilin, stated that the shocking catastrophe at Beit Hanoun was part of a preordained scenario. "The moral and diplomatic price that the country will pay will be much greater than any supposed gain that might be achieved in such an operation."

"The government must immediately order a halt to the fighting, and decide on the beginning of intensive negotiations at once in order to reach a total cease-fire. It is a pity that negotiations will commence under such burdensome conditions."

Meretz MK Haim Oron in reaction to the shelling of Beit Hanoun: "When you operate with a hammer instead of a tweezers in the most densely populated place in the world, only a miracle can prevent incidents like this."

The approach of using force and then more force is neither useful nor justified. Perhaps the Israeli government will finally realize that we must do all we can to begin negotiations with Abu Mazen [Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas] in order to end this awful cycle of bloodshed."
