The Meretz party has submitted a motion of no-confidence in the Binyamin Netanyahu government. This came after his Cabinet revised Israel’s list of “national priority zones” on Sunday to include more West Bank settlements. Inclusion within a ‘priority zone’ guarantees preferential governmental treatment and tax incentives for education, housing, infrastructure and employment. Over ¾ of all West Bank settlements will now be eligible for this treatment.
In a statement, Meretz chair, Haim Oron said that, “the cabinet decision teaches us that restarting the diplomatic process is not on the national list of priorities, and that Netanyahu and his colleagues are itching for a fight with the American government and the international community.” Oron called on Netanyahu to use his rhetorical gifts to explain his decision to the thousands of workers facing layoffs, whose employment security seems not to be on the list of government priorities.
